In response to the increasing need for computer skills and experience for success in one's education and career, the Gates Foundation Library Program was established to partner with public libraries across the country to provide low-income communities with access to computers, the Internet and digital information. Initially undertaken by Microsoft Corporation in 1995 under the title Microsoft Libraries Online!, the Gates Foundation Library Program was created in 1997 with a $200 million cash commitment from Bill and Melinda Gates.
